Michael S. Edwards is an attorney-at-law with over 20 years of experience representing credit unions, credit union service organizations (CUSOs), financial technology companies, trade associations, non-profit organizations, and small businesses in the United States and around the world on a wide range of regulatory, transactional, advocacy, compliance and other legal matters. He has served as Senior Vice President for Advocacy and General Counsel of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and was Senior Assistant General Counsel in the Regulatory Advocacy section of the Credit Union National Association (now America’s Credit Unions), the largest trade association for credit unions in the United States.
In addition to facilitating business transactions, regulatory matters, and litigation, Michael has spoken on a wide range of prudential safety and soundness, financial consumer protection, Bank Secrecy Act, field of membership, cybersecurity, accounting, corporate governance, due diligence and other credit union regulatory requirements. He has been published on credit union and banking regulatory issues by CUES‘s CUmanagment.com, the Administrative Law Review, Credit Union Times, CUInsight, Enterprise Magazine and other publications. He holds a J. D. from American University-Washington College of Law, an M.A. in International Affairs from American University-School of International Service and a B.A. in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
Michael is also a former Chairman of the US Overseas Cooperative Development Council, a Washington, DC-based trade association for cooperative organizations engaged in international development whose members include WOCCU, the National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International, NRECA International, Global Communities, Land O’Lakes Venture 37, Health Partners, GENEX, Equal Exchange, and ACDI/VOCA.
